On 26 September 2011, Swiss President Micheline Calmy-Rey will travel to Vaduz for the traditional four-country meeting of the Heads of State of Switzerland, Germany, Liechtenstein, and Austria. The discussions will focus on the domestic political situation in each of the countries, on European issues, and on the challenges facing the educational systems in the four countries.

The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) welcomes the release of the two American citizens Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal from Iranian imprisonment. They were able to leave Iran on September 21st 2011. Within the scope of its mandate as protecting power for the USA in Iran, the FDFA has been engaged over the past two years in seeking a solution to the case of the imprisoned US citizens. A third American citizen, Sarah Shourd, was released from prison on September 14 2010, after bail had been posted.

A Zurigo ha avuto luogo il 20 settembre 2011 il secondo turno di negoziati tra la Svizzera e l’Unione Europea sul collegamento dei sistemi di scambio di quote di emissioni di CO2. Un accordo in tale ambito consentirebbe il riconoscimento reciproco delle quote di emissioni e favorirebbe l’accesso delle imprese svizzere al mercato delle quote di emissioni europeo, di gran lunga più grande di quello svizzero e dotato di maggiore liquidità.

Switzerland will be represented by President of the Confederation Micheline Calmy-Rey at the High Level Meeting of the 66th UN General Assembly during the third week of September. The President will take part in the ministerial meeting on non-communicable diseases and in a symposium on international cooperation in combating terrorism. On 21 September, she will speak in the General Debate. Micheline Calmy-Rey will chair a ministerial meeting of the Organisation of the Francophonie, participate in the fourth session of the Panel on Global Sustainability and hold a series of bilateral talks.

On Tuesday evening, the President of the Confederation, Micheline Calmy-Rey, received the cantonal government of Ticino in Bern for talks on relations with Italy. Mrs Calmy-Rey made a point of saying that the Federal Council had been actively working on ways to overcome difficulties with Rome on a number of tax issues for some time already. Talks have been taking place with Italy since Mrs Calmy-Rey met the Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi at the beginning of June this year.

Coordinated responses to large-scale disasters and their impact on the environment is the subject of the Wilton Park conference from 12 to 15 September in Glion near Montreux. The conference initiated by Switzerland will prepare the United Nations conference on Sustainable Development (Rio + 20) next year. In the margins of the Wilton Park conference President of the Confederation Micheline Calmy-Rey met UN Under Secretary General Sha Zukang in Geneva.

A Swiss delegation headed by the President of the Swiss Confederation Micheline Calmy-Rey will attend the UN General Assembly's High-level Meeting on Non-Communicable Diseases on 19 and 20 September 2011 in New York. Given the growing prominence of non-communicable diseases, Switzerland will highlight the importance of prevention and the need to involve all sectors of government and civil society in formulating and implementing solutions to confront this scourge.

On Wednesday, 22 May, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis will travel to Budapest to meet with his Hungarian counterpart Péter Szijjártó and Minister for European Union Affairs Janos Bóka. He will also pay a courtesy visit to President Tamás Sulyok. Hungary will hold the presidency of the Council of the EU in the second half of 2024. Following his visit to Hungary, Mr Cassis will travel to Montenegro on 23 May at the invitation of Foreign Minister Filip Ivanovic, before meeting Serbian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Siniša Mali in Belgrade on Friday, 24 May.The meetings will focus on Switzerland's bilateral relations with the three countries, European policy and the European security situation.

Switzerland organised a meeting of the UN Security Council on 17 May 2024 to strengthen collaboration between the scientific community and the council. Incorporating science into the council's decision-making process can foster mutual trust and help prevent conflicts, promoting sustainable peace – a key priority for the Federal Council during Switzerland's Security Council membership in 2023–24.

At its meeting on 15 May 2024, the Federal Council took note of the eighth annual report on the implementation of the Federal Act on Private Security Services Provided Abroad (PSSA). The Act requires companies intending to offer private security services abroad from Switzerland to declare the services to the competent authority in advance. In 2023, the FDFA received 95 declarations from companies. No activities were prohibited.

The head of the FDFA, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, will attend the 133rd session of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg on 16 and 17 May 2024, which will be held under the presidency of the Principality of Liechtenstein. The discussions will focus on the war against Ukraine and the adoption of a framework convention on artificial intelligence. Mr Cassis will also take part in the ceremony marking the council's 75th anniversary.

At its meeting on 8 May 2024, the Federal Council decided to make a contribution of CHF 10 million to the humanitarian aid appeal of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). The CHF 10 million contribution is exclusively earmarked for Gaza and will be used to provide the urgent assistance specified in the UNRWA Flash Appeal for the occupied Palestinian territory covering the period April–December 2024. In its overall assessment, the Federal Council drew on the analysis of the Colonna report and coordination with other donors. The Federal Council will submit this decision to the foreign affairs committees of the National Council and Council of States for consultation.

Political and economic relations and collaboration in the fields of sustainability, science and multilateral forums were at the heart of the discussions. The Brazilian minister's Swiss origins were also discussed.

In his capacity as head of the FDFA, Mr Cassis was invited by his Saudi counterpart to attend the two-day event which aims to bridge the growing North-South divide by promoting global collaboration.

On 24 April 2024, the UN General Assembly approved funding for an independent institution to investigate cases of missing persons in Syria, to be based in Geneva. As part of its peace policy, Switzerland is firmly committed to clarifying the fate of detained and missing persons. In doing so, it is making a significant contribution to dealing with the past, which is central to peace processes – including in Syria. Switzerland therefore welcomes the international community's decision for the institution to begin its work in International Geneva in 2024.

The r4d programme of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) came to a close today at a public event in Bern. The two institutions also took the opportunity to launch a new programme called Solution-oriented Research for Development (SOR4D). The two programmes involve the implementation of projects in the fields of health, food security, social conflicts, ecosystems, employment and income in developing countries.

Palestine's application for full UN membership will not be submitted to the UN General Assembly due to the veto by the United States on 18 April in the UN Security Council. Switzerland abstained from the vote. After assessing the situation and consulting with the chairs of the parliamentary foreign affairs committees, the Federal Council concluded that granting Palestine full UN membership at this time would not be conducive to easing the situation and peace efforts in the Middle East. Switzerland remains committed to the two-state solution.

The FDFA has showcased some innovative technology at the 50th WEF, which could reduce global CO2 emissions by millions of tonnes per year. The SDC undertakes a range of projects in the construction industry, working in cooperation with academia and the private sector. The aim of these projects, which are located in emerging economies, is to tackle global warming effectively.

At its meeting on 20 December 2019, the Federal Council approved an exchange of notes between Switzerland and Italy regarding the change of the customs status of the Italian enclave of Campione d'Italia. This exchange of notes is necessary to ensure legal certainty and facilitates the transition of Campione d'Italia into the European Union's customs territory, scheduled for 1 January 2020.

On 16 and 17 December 2019 a third meeting of the Working Group on Unresolved Issues established by the Joint Committee, supervising the implementation of the Agreement between the Government of Georgia and the Government of the Russian Federation on the basic principles for a mechanism of customs administration and monitoring of trade in goods, signed on 9 November 2011, took place in Bern.
