Bern, Press releases, 02.12.2011

Delegations from Egypt and Switzerland convened on 2 December 2011 in Berne to hold a legal expert meeting on frozen assets restitution. The aim of the talks was to take stock of progress made so far and to strengthen bilateral cooperation with a view to reaching the common goal: an efficient restitution of any assets of illicit origin from the entourage of the former Mubarak regime.

Both parties are pursuing the legal proceedings with all necessary effort. The delegations were satisfied with the open and constructive discussions. They agreed to continue their exchange through follow-up meetings to be held in regular intervals, with a next meeting scheduled to take place at the end of January 2012.

Immediately after the fall of the former Egyptian president Mubarak on 11 February 2011, the Federal Council decided by decree that the assets of persons from the entourage of the former Mubarak regime were to be frozen. The frozen assets total about CHF 410 million CHF (at the exchange rates of May 2011). In this context, Egypt has already made several requests for mutual legal assistance to Switzerland that are being reviewed by the competent Swiss authorities.
