Office of the Ambassador-at-Large for the Application of International Humanitarian Law

The office of the Ambassador-at-Large for the Application of International Humanitarian Law is responsible for heading, together with the ICRC, an initiative to strengthen compliance with international humanitarian law (IHL).

The 31st International Conference of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent adopted Resolution 31IC/11/R1 on strengthening the legal protection of victims of armed conflicts. The Resolution expresses “its appreciation to the government of Switzerland for its commitment to explore and identify concrete ways and means to strengthen the application of international humanitarian law and reinforce dialogue on international humanitarian law issues among States and other interested actors, in cooperation with the ICRC”.

In the framework of this initiative, Switzerland and the ICRC jointly organize regular meetings of States to enable them to exchange views more systematically about IHL issues, particularly compliance with IHL.
