In the context of globalisation and the increasing internationalisation of all aspects of life, individual reasons for mobility and the methods that are available have become more diverse and complex. In addition to voluntary migration however, there are a number of situations that result in forced displacement.
Foreign policy on migration
Switzerland is committed to protecting refugees, internally displaced persons and migrants. It works to establish a framework that promotes respect for and the protection of their rights.
It does this at multilateral level via the international dialogue on migration and at bilateral level through migration partnerships.
The Federal Administration coordinates its migration-related activities under an interdepartmental structure for international cooperation on migration (the ICM structure), which was created by the Federal Council in February 2011.
