Bern, Press releases, 18.05.2012

Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter will participate at the NATO Summit scheduled to be held on 20 and 21 May 2012 in Chicago. On this occasion, the Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) will evoke the common challenges the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and its partner states including Switzerland are facing, and the best approaches to coping with them in the years to come.

At the NATO Summit being organized in the American metropolis, Mr. Burkhalter will take part in a meeting between the 28 NATO-member states and its partner states which include Switzerland.

Switzerland is a member of the Partnership for Peace (PfP) and the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council (EAPC). Founded in 1996 and 1997, respectively, with the aim of fostering dialogue and cooperation on security issues, the PfP and the EAPC bring together the 28 NATO member states and their total 22 partner states. These institutions allow frequent consultations. Since the 1990s, this cooperation has been contributing to security and stabilization in Europe.

Participation at this Chicago Summit will provide Mr. Burkhalter, Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), with an opportunity to draw the attention of the NATO member states and its partners not only to issues which Switzerland deems vital for its security, but also to the priority initiatives of Switzerland’s foreign policy in this domain, for instance disarmament initiatives and measures for the regulation of private security companies.

The FDFA is in charge of dealing with issues concerning Switzerland’s international security policy, primarily in coordination with the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS).
