President of the Confederation Micheline Calmy-Rey, head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs FDFA, met UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in Geneva on 19 July 2011. Their talks focused on governance issues relating to global sustainability and questions concerning International Geneva.

Geneva is the host city to the largest UN headquarters in Europe. At the end of June, the Federal Council agreed to release a one-off financial contribution by Switzerland of CHF 50 million to the renovation of the UN building in Geneva. This will be used mainly to improve the energy efficiency of this UN building.
