Article 5 of the Swiss Abroad Act stipulates that every individual shall exercise personal responsibility when planning or undertaking a stay abroad or when working abroad.

Foreign nationals who are legally allowed to enter the EU, UK, US or Canada can enter the Dominican Republic simply by presenting a tourist card (Tarjeta de Turista), which can be used for a visit of up to 30 days. The card is valid for one year from the date of purchase and may only be used once. The tourist card can be bought at any of the country's land, air or sea ports, at Dominican Republic embassies and consular offices abroad, through travel companies, or online. Tourists who wish to stay longer than 30 days must pay a fee, which varies depending on the additional duration of their stay. This can be done at the General Directorate of Migration (Dirección General de Migración) or the migration office when leaving the country. Foreign nationals who wish to settle in the Dominican Republic need a residence visa (Visa de Residencia). Applications for residence visas should be submitted to the responsible Dominican Republic representation. Successful applicants will be entitled to a one-time stay of 60 days in the Dominican Republic during which time they must apply for a provisional residence permit from the General Directorate of Migration. A permanent residence permit (Residencia Permanente) will be issued after one year.

Before entering the Dominican Republic, foreign nationals must fill out an online form (E-ticket), which is required by several national authorities responsible for persons entering and leaving the country. For the customs and immigration authorities as well as the health ministry, the information provided in the E-ticket must be truthful, complete, and in line with Dominican Republic law.

Registration with the Swiss representation abroad

Obligations

Swiss nationals who are relocating abroad must register with the competent Swiss representation (embassy or consulate) abroad. They must do so within 90 days of the date on which they deregistered from their last commune of residence in Switzerland. You can register directly at the representation or via the online desk. To register as a Swiss citizen abroad, you need a valid passport (or a valid ID), a deregistration certificate and, if you have one, a certificate of origin.

Rights

Registration is free of charge. Registering will enable the Swiss authorities to contact you in an emergency and facilitate speedier processing of administrative matters such as issuing an identity or civil status document. Registering is also a good way to stay in touch with Switzerland. Swiss citizens who are registered with a Swiss representation abroad receive the Swiss Review – the magazine for the Swiss community abroad – free of charge. If you are over 18, you can also register to vote on initiatives and in referendums and elections in Switzerland.
