Switzerland welcomes successful completion of Mozambique's demobilisation

In Mozambique, the RENAMO opposition movement's last military base has just been closed. Switzerland welcomes this milestone in Mozambique's peace process and took part in the official ceremony in Maputo on 23 June to mark the end of the disarmament and demobilisation process.


Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis on official visit to Morocco welcomes strengthened bilateral cooperation

Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, the head of the FDFA, visited Rabat on 22 and 23 June at the invitation of his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates. Switzerland and Morocco enjoy excellent bilateral relations and are further expanding their partnerships in trade, sustainable development and scientific research.



Colombian Truth Commission: Switzerland retains archive copy

At its meeting on 21 June, the Federal Council approved an agreement to retain a digital backup copy of the archives of the Colombian Truth Commission. Dealing with the past is a key focus area of Switzerland's long-standing peace policy work in Colombia. In safeguarding such sensitive data, Switzerland is supporting the peace process in the long term.


Federal Council approves parameters for EU negotiating mandate

At its meeting on 21 June 2023, the Federal Council approved the parameters for a negotiating mandate with the EU. Discussions with the EU will continue on this basis, with a view to resolving any outstanding issues. If discussions with the EU and internal work continue to progress satisfactorily, the Federal Council will prepare for the adoption of a negotiating mandate by the end of the year.


Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis to visit the Kingdom of Morocco

The head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) will visit Rabat on 22 and 23 June. He will meet his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita. Economic relations and migration cooperation will be at the centre of discussions, as will recent developments in the region.


International cooperation: FDFA and EAER launch consultation on goals and priorities of 2025–28 strategy

Interested parties have three months to submit comments on the draft version of Switzerland's next international cooperation strategy. Public consultation is a key stage before the Federal Council will decide on adopting the new strategy in spring 2024. CHF 11.45 billion has been earmarked for the 2025–28 period. Swiss international cooperation contributes to freedom, security and prosperity in Switzerland and around the world and demonstrates solidarity in the face of global challenges.


Ignazio Cassis receives Georgian foreign minister Ilia Darchiashvili in Bern

The head of the FDFA, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, received the Georgian minister of foreign affairs, Ilia Darchiashvili, on an official visit to Bern on Monday 19 June 2023. Talks focused on the further development of bilateral relations, the situation in the South Caucasus and multilateral cooperation. Of note in Georgian–Swiss relations are the growth in trade between the two nations, as well as Switzerland's good offices and its long-standing involvement in the region.


Launch of new cooperation programme between Switzerland and Latvia

Switzerland and Latvia have signed a bilateral agreement implementing the second Swiss contribution to selected EU member states. Under the agreement Switzerland will allocate CHF 40.4 million towards programmes in Latvia in the fields of polluted site remediation, applied research, vocational education and training and healthcare.


From Lugano to London: Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis attends second Ukraine Recovery Conference

Switzerland is supporting reconstruction efforts in Ukraine through concrete measures for the people affected by the war. It also played a key role in the initiation of the Ukraine Recovery Conference, the first edition of which Switzerland co-organised in Lugano in July 2022. In his capacity as head of the FDFA, Mr Cassis will be taking part in a panel on mine action at this second conference, taking place in Lo ndon on 21 and 22 June 2023. As co-organiser of last year's Ukraine Recovery Conference, he will also give a speech at the closing plenary together with this and next year's organisers, collectively known as the 'troika'.


Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit turns 50

A celebration is in order: for half a century, the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit (SHA) has been the face of Switzerland's humanitarian aid, providing assistance worldwide before, during and after crises of all kinds. Today, it is impossible to imagine Switzerland's international cooperation without it.
