Swiss international cooperation in the fight against zoonoses: Federal Council report

At its meeting on 16 August 2023, the Federal Council approved a report on Switzerland's international cooperation efforts to combat zoonoses. Diseases transmitted from animals to humans, such as COVID-19, account for 60% of human infectious diseases. The report was drawn up in response to a postulate from the National Council's Foreign Policy Committee. It demonstrates the importance of a holistic approach to zoonoses, as well as a concerted international response. The report also shows how Swiss international cooperation is well placed to meet these challenges.


Switzerland takes part in G20 anti-corruption ministerial meeting in India

Switzerland has taken part in this year's G20 Anti-Corruption Working Group (ACWG) ministerial meeting at the invitation of the Indian G20 presidency for 2023. The meeting, which took place on 12 August 2023, has allowed Switzerland to contribute to the development of international guidance and share its experience on anti-corruption.


Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis in Australia and New Zealand: global security and bilateral relations at centre of talks

Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis visited Australia and New Zealand from 6 to 9 August. The official talks focused on bilateral relations, the geopolitical situation in the Pacific region and climate change. In New Zealand, the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between New Zealand and Switzerland was celebrated and a Memorandum of Understanding to establish diplomatic relations with Niue was signed.



Ignazio Cassis visits South East Asia and Pacific region

Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis will travel to Singapore, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand from 1 to 9 August 2023. The visits to Indonesia and Singapore will centre on the implementation of the Federal Council's South East Asia Strategy. In Australia and New Zealand, the focus will be on global challenges and strengthening bilateral relations. Mr Cassis will also use the trip to meet local Swiss communities in the four countries to mark 1 August celebrations.


Switzerland joins 9th Francophone Games in DRC

The 9th edition of the Francophone Games is taking place in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), from 28 July to 6 August 2023. Switzerland is sending a sporting and cultural delegation to the competition, which brings together some 3,000 participants from 40 different countries.


On 25th anniversary of Rome Statute, Switzerland chairs UN Security Council meeting on the International Criminal Court

In 2023, the states parties to the Rome Statute will celebrate the 25th anniversary of this founding text, marking the international community's commitment to the fight against impunity. On 17 July, Switzerland took part in the commemorations organised in New York. The following day, together with Japan, it organised an informal meeting of the Security Council on the contribution of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to international peace and security. The meeting provided an opportunity for member states to express their support for the ICC as an independent and impartial judicial institution, and to underscore the role of justice in peace.


Switzerland focuses on transboundary water management in New York

A Swiss delegation is taking part in the UN's 2023 High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), which is being held in New York from 10 to 19 July. The Swiss delegation hosted an event at the HLPF on transboundary water management as a driver of sustainable development and peace. The HLPF is a pivotal preparatory event for the 2023 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Summit to be held in September.


Ignazio Cassis meets with Maroš Šefčovič in Brussels

Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, head of the FDFA, has met with Maroš Šefčovič, the European Commission's vice-president for interinstitutional relations and foresight. The meeting provided an opportunity to take stock of the exploratory talks between Switzerland and the EU.

Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, head of the FDFA, will travel to Brussels on 18 July for a meeting with Maroš Šefčovič, the European Commission's vice-president for interinstitutional relations and foresight. The meeting will be an opportunity to review relations with the European Union (EU).


Swiss expertise bolsters humanitarian demining efforts in Ukraine

The Swiss Confederation is using Swiss expertise to support humanitarian demining in Ukraine. It supports the Ukrainian authorities' activities and contributes to the clearance of mines and unexploded ordnance through projects carried out by the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) and the Fondation suisse de déminage (FSD).


United Nations Human Rights Council: Switzerland co-authors resolution on child, early and forced marriage

The 53rd session of the UN Human Rights Council ended on 14 July. This session, which began on 19 June, focused on protecting the rights of women and girls, a sensitive issue within the council. Switzerland was particularly active, along with eleven other countries representing all regions of the world, in drafting a resolution on the fight against child, early and forced marriage.
