Bern, Press releases, 23.03.2011

The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) strongly condemns the attack carried out today in West Jerusalem in which one person was killed and around twenty people were injured. The FDFA is deeply concerned at the escalation of violence in Israel and the occupied territories and is calling on all parties to exercise restraint.

The FDFA strongly condemns the attack carried out today in West Jerusalem and regrets the victims of this blind violence.

The FDFA has repeated its condemnation of the rockets fired from the Gaza Strip against civilians in the south of Israel and is calling for an immediate cessation. The FDFA likewise deplores the Israeli military operation on 22 March 2011 in the Gaza Strip, in which four people, two of them children, died.

The FDFA is deeply concerned at the current escalation of violence in Israel and the occupied territories. It is calling on all parties to exercise restraint and has again stated that the conflict in the Middle East cannot be resolved by violence or military action. Only dialogue between all parties on the creation of a viable Palestinian state that will exist alongside Israel within safe and recognized borders can lead to a peaceful resolution of this conflict.
