Bern, Press releases, 17.12.2010

Today, Federal Councillor Micheline Calmy-Rey, Head of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), has received the Malaysian Foreign Minister, Dato’ Sri Anifah Hj. Aman for official talks.

Federal Councillor Calmy-Rey and her Malaysian counterpart discussed issues including bilateral relations, co-operation between Malaysia and EFTA, interreligious dialogue, the role of the United Nations Panel on Global Sustainability, and the universal periodic review of the Human Rights Council.

After Singapore and Thailand, Malaysia is Switzerland’s third-largest trading partner in Southeast Asia. In July 2010, EFTA and Malaysia signed a declaration of co-operation with a view to initiating negotiations on a free-trade agreement. Currently, both Switzerland and Malaysia are members of the United Nations Human Rights Council. The two countries have regular high-level political contacts.
