Switzerland is deeply concerned about the political developments in Venezuela, the growing polarisation, the human rights violations, the use of violence and the increasingly serious social and economic consequences for the population.
Switzerland calls on the Venezuelan government not to proceed with Sunday’s planned elections for a constituent assembly. This process, which legality and legitimacy are highly disputed in Venezuela itself, heightens tension and reinforces the divisions within society, and could thus lead to a further escalation of violence.
Switzerland calls on all sides to refrain from taking any measures and actions that could aggravate the crisis. Democratic institutions, the separation of powers and human rights must be respected. Furthermore, Switzerland calls on the parties to promptly establish the conditions required to allow the resumption of a genuine dialogue – based on clear and accepted commitments – that will enable a negotiated and durable resolution to the crisis. Setting a binding election timetable that is accepted by all sides is an urgent priority.
