On the evening of Friday 15 January 2016 armed fighters attacked a hotel and a restaurant popular with westerners in Burkina Faso's capital Ouagadougou. At least 20 people were killed. Two Swiss citizens were also among the victims, it was discovered on Saturday. They had been in the restaurant during the attack. The FDFA is in contact with the relatives of the victims and is offering them consular protection. It is unable to disclose any further information concerning the identity of the victims due to data protection and privacy.
Mr Burkhalter was deeply shocked by the brutal attacks. "We strongly condemn these terrorist acts and thank all those states that are helping to end such acts of violence. We demand that every effort be made to find the perpetrators of these attacks and to bring them to justice. Our thoughts are with the families and relatives of the victims at this difficult time," he said.
