President of the Confederation Micheline Calmy-Rey, head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), today met the Austrian Foreign Minister and Vice-Chancellor Michael Spindelegger and the Liechtenstein Foreign Minister Aurelia Frick for official working talks at Kehrsatz near Bern. International questions of mutual interest were at the top of the agenda at this meeting.

Switzerland holds regular meetings with the neighbouring countries of Austria and Lichtenstein in order to cultivate neighbourly relations and to exchange information. This year President of the Confederation Micheline Calmy-Rey invited her counterparts Michael Spindelegger, Vice Chancellor and Foreign Minister of the  Republic of Austria, and Aurelia Frick, Government Councillor and Foreign Minister of the Principality of Lichtenstein. Their talks focused on their countries' relations with the EU and on developments in the Maghreb and the Near East. Humanitarian issues, international energy questions and various multilateral concerns were also on the agenda.

Mrs Calmy-Rey stressed the excellent relations between Switzerland and its neighbouring countries. "Switzerland's relations with Austria and Liechtenstein are characterised by close partnership in several areas and by common values and mentalities", she said.
