Bern, Press releases, 05.07.2011

The President of the Swiss Confederation, Micheline Calmy-Rey, is to meet the President of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Medvedev, on 13 July in the Russian city of Kolomna. She will be accompanied by Federal Councillor Johann Schneider-Ammann. The two Presidents will inaugurate the cement works of the Swiss company Holcim in Kolomna.

Since the signing of a memorandum of understanding on general bilateral relations in 2007, relations between Switzerland and Russia have intensified considerably at the political, economic, scientific and cultural levels. Regular high-level contacts as well as dozens of bilateral consultations in various areas bear witness to this fact. Mrs. Calmy-Rey had a meeting with the Russian Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin, in Geneva on 15 June this year.

The meeting will cover both bilateral and international questions. On the agenda are the further development of relations between Switzerland and Russia, notably in the areas of trade, finance and investment as well as Switzerland’s  role due to its mandates as a protecting power representing Russian interests in Georgia and Georgian interests in Russia.
