Bern, Press releases, 29.03.2011

President of the Swiss Confederation Micheline Calmy-Rey today received Tajik Foreign Minister Hamrokhon Zarifi for an official working visit. Their talks focused on bilateral relations and on international and multilateral issues.

The purpose of the meeting was to intensify relations between the two countries. The main focus was on the development of political and economic relations, technical cooperation and the human rights dialogue, which started in 2009. The political situation in Central Asia, relations between Tajikistan and its neighbours and multilateral cooperation were also discussed.

Trade relations between the two countries are currently not very intensive. On the other hand Tajikistan is a priority country for Swiss development cooperation. The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) are active in the fields of water management, reform of the health sector, strengthening of civil society, infrastructure and promotion of private industry. Tajikistan is a member of Switzerland's constituency group in the Bretton Woods Institutions.
