Bern, Press releases, 22.03.2011

Due to the uncertain conditions in the greater metropolitan area of Tokyo, the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, FDFA, has decided to temporarily transfer the Swiss Embassy in Japan to Osaka. From there, and to the extent possible, it will continue to help Swiss nationals who are seeking to leave the country. The FDFA is advising all Swiss nationals to leave the greater area of Tokyo and the north east of Japan.

According to Swiss experts, the situation regarding the damaged nuclear plant in Fukushima remains very uncertain. In addition, the direction of the wind is expected to change in the coming hours and radiation levels in Tokyo could be increased. Thus the FDFA is continuing to advise all Swiss to leave the critical areas in the north east of Japan and the greater metropolitan areas of Tokyo/Yokohama. The FDFA accordingly reserved all available seats for Swiss nationals on the Swiss flights from Tokyo to Zurich on 18, 19 and 20 March. As the demand was limited, the FDFA has cancelled the charter flight that had been planned for Sunday from Osaka.

Due to the uncertain conditions in the greater metropolitan area of Tokyo, the FDFA has decided to temporarily transfer the Swiss Embassy in Japan from Tokyo to Osaka. From there, and to the extent possible, it will continue to help Swiss nationals who are seeking to leave the country. When conditions normalise, the Embassy will be quickly returned to Tokyo. The Embassy is closely monitoring the situation and is in contact with Japanese officials and with experts in Switzerland. Swiss nationals who are living or temporarily staying in Japan will continue to be informed about any relevant changes by e-mail or on the homepage of the Embassy. The FDFA Helpline (tel +41 800 24-7-365) will also stay in service.
