Position of FDFA

Switzerland condemns the decision of the Israeli authorities to expedite the construction of several thousand additional housing units in the colonies of East Jerusalem and the neighbouring areas. It is also extremely concerned by the announcement of a possible hold on the transfer of funds to the Palestinian Authority.

The colonization of the occupied Palestinian territory, both in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, is illegal and constitutes a violation of international law. In addition, the colonization activities represent a threat in the search for a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict based on the creation of a viable State of Palestinian living side-by-side with the State of Israel within secure and recognized borders.

Switzerland is extremely concerned by the announcements coming from the Israeli government concerning a possible hold on the transfer of funds to the Palestinian Authority. Such a decision would be contrary to Israel’s international commitments. Switzerland appeals to the Israeli authorities to continue transferring the tax revenue collected in the name of the Palestinian Authority. These funds constitute a significant part of the Palestinian Authority’s budget; hence, an eventual hold would cause extreme prejudice to the efforts, supported by the international community, in bringing about reforms and the consolidation of Palestinian institutions.
