Swiss Position

Switzerland is extremely concerned by the events which have taken place over the past days in Egypt. It condemns the acts of violence that have taken the lives of some twenty persons, and calls upon all of the actors to exercise maximum restraint. It stresses the importance of upholding public order in conformity with the respect for human rights.

Protecting the basic rights of all Egyptians must be a central concern within the process of political transition initiated last February. In this context and with the approach of the first elections in the country following the fall of the Mubarak regime, Switzerland calls for the aspirations of the Egyptian people to be respected and for their human rights to be guaranteed.
