Bern, Press releases, 08.02.2010

Federal Councillor Micheline Calmy-Rey will travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo and to Tanzania from 9-13 February 2010 to hold talks on ministerial level. While in the DRC, she will visit SDC programmes in South Kivu Province in the east of the country. The trip will focus on Switzerland’s cooperation and development activities, in particular in the health sector.

On 10 February 2010, the Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) will meet her Congolese counterpart, Alexis Thambwe Mwamba, and the Minister of International and South Cooperation Department, Raymond Ntunga Mulongo, in Kinshasa. The main subject of the talks will be cooperation and development, in particular the health-care programme in South Kivu Province.

On Wednesday and Thursday, Mrs Calmy-Rey will visit South Kivu, where the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) is supporting a series of projects within the framework of its regional programme focused on the Great Lakes area. The programme includes, for instance, a women’s project in the provincial capital, Bukavu, for the psychological and social welfare of victims of violence, as well as the construction of a centre for child and youth medicine in the General Hospital in Uvira.

On Friday, Mrs Calmy-Rey will travel on to Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. Tanzania is also an SDC focal country, where Switzerland is strongly active in the public health sector, for example in supporting research into malaria at the Heath Institute in the provincial city, Ifakara.
