Bern, Press releases, 09.10.2009

The head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), who arrived yesterday in Bishkek, was today received by the Prime Minister Igor Chudinov and subsequently met with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Baktygul Kalambekova.

The meetings were an opportunity for reviewing the development of bilateral relations in the framework of a technical cooperation partnership which Switzerland established with the Kyrgyz Republic 15 years ago. They also discussed the question of water management in the region.

The Kyrgyz Republic is one of the first countries of the former Soviet Union with which Switzerland has signed economic and trade agreements as well as for the protection of investments and in relation to double taxation. It is the only Central Asian nation that belongs to the World Trade Organization.

In the opinion of the two Ministers prospects are currently favourable for the further development of economic and trade relations. Another important aspect of the consultations, cooperation in the framework of the Bretton Woods voting group headed by Switzerland which includes Kirghizstan, was satisfactory to both sides.

The visit to the Kyrgyz Republic brings to an end Mrs. Calmy-Rey’s series of official meetings in the capitals of Central Asia. The meetings have enabled Switzerland to further develop high level contacts in a region that is of particular importance for its foreign policy.
