Key aspects of diplomatic relations

Switzerland has defined a strategy for sub-Saharan Africa for the period 2021–24.

In 2011, Switzerland and Liberia signed an agreement on the cancellation of Liberian debt to Switzerland. During the Ebola crisis from 2014 to 2016, Switzerland supported emergency response measures costing over CHF 30 million in the Mano River region. The funding allocated was used primarily in Liberia.

Development cooperation and humanitarian aid

During the civil war in the 1990s, Switzerland provided humanitarian aid to Liberia. From 2004 to 2016, it supported the reconstruction of the country in the areas of health, infrastructure, food security, and protection of the civilian population. The return and sustainable reintegration of refugees and internally displaced persons were two of Switzerland's priorities.

Swiss citizens in Liberia

According to statistics on the Swiss abroad, 23 Swiss citizens were living in Liberia at the end of 2020 and 96 Liberian citizens were living in Switzerland.

History of bilateral relations

Switzerland opened a consulate in Monrovia in 1954, a consulate general in 1957, and an embassy headed by a chargé d'affaires in 1965. All these representations were closed in 1992. Switzerland's interests were, at a later point in time, entrusted to a consulate general headed by an honorary representative. From 2006 to 2016, Switzerland had an office for cooperation and the management of consular affairs in Monrovia. This office also coordinated humanitarian operations.

In 1961, Switzerland concluded an agreement on air transport with Liberia, followed in 1963 by a bilateral treaty on friendship and trade and another on arbitration.
