Good sexual and reproductive health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being in all matters relating to the reproductive system. To maintain one’s sexual and reproductive health, access to accurate information and to safe, effective, affordable and acceptable contraception methods is needed. Women, adolescents and young people are the most exposed to poor knowledge and access to quality sexual and reproductive health and rights. This includes promoting human rights, gender equality and advancing the universal health coverage agenda. 

The US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Roe v. Wade landmark decision in June 2022 has reignited a fierce debate over abortion rights in a global context with growing political backlash against sexual and reproductive health and rights. This might knock out decades of investment in family planning, safe abortion, and girls’ empowerment in low- and middle-income countries. It has also marked a change of paradigm in championing sexual and reproductive health and rights, with countries like Benin having for example one of the most liberal abortion laws in Africa. In this context, advancing the sexual and reproductive health and rights agenda and counteracting raising backlash on women’s rights, is key.

IPPF is a global healthcare provider and a leading advocate of sexual and reproductive health and rights for all. Since its creation in 1952, IPPF has been delivering comprehensive sexuality education and providing contraceptives, safe abortions, and maternal care through local organizations in 146 countries.

Sexual and reproductive health and rights, gender equality and health equity is at the core of SDC’s engagement in health. SDC is supporting IPPF since 1995. This phase puts a stronger focus on advancing sexual and reproductive rights and gender equality, as well as on addressing the remaining gaps in providing quality services in humanitarian or conflict-affected countries.

-    Care is centered on people by providing quality, person-centred care to more people, in more places.

-    The sexuality agenda is moved forward by working towards societal and legislative change for universal sexual and reproductive rights.

-    Impact is amplified by building bridges, shaping discourse, and connecting communities, movements, and sectors.

-    The Federation is nurtured from a common value base and its collective power for greater impact is unleashed.

Principaux résultats attendus:  

-    Providing over 608 million sexual and reproductive health services, of which 394.6 million will be for young people and over 208.7 million for women and girls.

-    Averting an estimated 40.3 million unintended pregnancies and 16 million unsafe abortions.

-    Ensuring that 107.2 million young people complete a qualityassured comprehensive sexuality education programme.

-    Delivering 92.8 million couple years of protection.

-    Contributing to at least 357 successful policy and legislative changes in support of sexual and reproductive health and rights at all levels.

-    Serving 19.7 million people affected by humanitarian crisis.

-    Working with over 990,000 IPPF volunteers.

During the period 2020-22, IPPF has achieved the following results:

-    Advocacy at National Level: National governments in Chad, DRC, Ethiopia, India, Mali, Niger and Uganda, have integrated sexual and reproductive health as an essential service during the COVID-19 pandemic; new legislation which criminalizes female genital mutilation has been adopted in Sudan; abortion Laws in Benin have been changed to widen the conditions under which abortion care can legally be accessed; abortion rights have been reconsidered in Mexico; same-sex marriage has been decriminalized in Botswana.

-    Advocacy at International and Regional Level: IPPF contributed to the relaunch of the African Union’s Campaign for Accelerated Reduction of Maternal Mortality in Africa; targeted advocacy has been sustained by IPPF’s Liaison Office in Geneva.

-    Empowering Communities: 60.31 million young people completed a quality-assured comprehensive sexuality education programme; 210’055 educators have been trained to provide such a programme. 

-    Serving People: IPPF provided 298.97 million sexual and reproductive health services and 5.76 million abortion-related services; it delivered modern contraception to 12.79 million firsttime users and provided 55.79 million couple years of protection, averting over 24 million unintended pregnancies and 7.22 million unsafe abortions. IPPF provided 11.54 million people affected by a humanitarian crisis with services. An estimated 112 million of all IPPF service users were women and girls.
