Research for action: Water, Behavior Change and Envi-ronmental Sanitation: Sustainable Solutions to Research, Knowledge and Professionalization (WABES)
Equitable access to safe water and sanitation facilities and services is by far not achieved and a stronger push on multiple levels will be necessary over the next decade to reach SDG 6. This includes developing and using innovative technologies, based on applied research, to foster affordable and sustainable solutions for increased access to safe water and adequate sanitation. To this aim, the SDC continues its fruitful collaboration with the Swiss Research Institute Eawag.

Contexte | Although access to safe drinking water and sanitation has been recognised as a Human Right since 2010, 2 billion people still lacked safely managed drinking water, and an estimated 4 billion people still do not have safely managed sanitation. Data shows sharp geographic, sociocultural and economic disparities in access leading to health threats, especially with the poor, marginalized and vulnerable groups. A lot therefore remains to be done. |
Objectifs | A water secure world, where people have the knowledge and capacity to live healthy lives with safely managed services (safe water, solid waste management and sanitation) and the means to recover and utilise resources. |
Groupes cibles |
· residents of urban/peri-urban areas/selected small towns in Sub-Saharan · national and local utilities and authorities, specialized NGO’s and universities · for capacity development/knowledge dissemination: practitioners, students, |
Effets à moyen terme |
Outcome 1: Improved and equitable access to safely managed water Outcome 2: Improved and equitable access to safely managed environmental sanitation, considering circular economy principles Outcome 3: Integrated, inclusive planning for safely managed water and waste services is available and applied in small towns of Sub-Saharan Africa Outcome 4: Knowledge and expertise/training content is used and applied in practice by students and development practitioners |
Résultats |
Principaux résultats attendus: · Recommendations on optimal degree of treatment decentralization for · Solutions for dynamic operation of faecal sludge treatment · A validated integrated planning approach for safely managed water and · Improved uptake and application of developed knowledge (knowledge Principaux résultats antérieurs: Main results of the first phase include the production and dissemination of key water and sanitation sector publications and repositories such as the Water Compendium, the online GAP platform, the IWA book Methods for Faecal Sludge Analysis (2021) and an update of the renowned MOOC-series “Sanitation, Water and Solid Waste for Development” as well as the uptake of the conceptual work on City-wide Inclusive Sanitation. On an outcome level, sanitation planning in two pilot towns in Nepal provided a blueprint for a generic city sanitation planning framework for Nepal. In addition, an external evaluation i.a. highlighted two key issues, namely (i) the need for an intervention logic that goes beyond Eawag’s contribution and (ii) the need for more comprehensive knowledge brokerage. |
