Shohsanam Ibrohimova, 18 years old, student of the Yangiyer Vocational College of Agriculture

“I’m a second-year student of the pilot group for maintenance and operation of irrigation and drainage machinery and mechanical equipment.

To be honest, at the beginning I wanted to get into any college in our region basically to meet the necessary requirements to become a student of an institute or university after graduation. But after attending the open day at the Yangiyer Vocational College of Agriculture, I heard about the Swiss project’s pilot class on the maintenance and operation of irrigation and drainage machinery and mechanical equipment, and that the college wanted to attract young women to this trade. I applied for the course and was enrolled.

Within the first month of my studies I didn’t notice anything special. But then the project provided necessary furniture, computers and other equipment to our college and an e-library was launched. We have no computers at home and so I made use of this new opportunity to gain computer knowledge and skills, and whenever possible I took the opportunity to go on the internet. The e-library is also a wonderful way of increasing your knowledge independently. This is something that I will really need for my studies at an institute of higher education.

Some of my teachers at the college use the equipment for making the lessons more interesting for us. We were given assignments to make presentations on different subjects the using the computer lab and e-library facilities. With the help of Power Point we presented our laboratory work to our classmates. There are still some teachers who don’t take advantage of the new possibilities yet, though. We spoke about this in a meeting with Swiss project experts and they promised us to organise more training for the teachers.

I’ve realised that I’m getting more and more interested in learning the subjects of the trade I chose. It came naturally after I did the first introductory in-company training. To me it was interesting how the modern technologies are used at the pumping station. We were able to find out a lot of information about modern technologies there. Now I know that water management facilities could be an interesting workplace for women who are interested in IT.”
