Migration

Migration – a priority for the SDC

© SDC

A migrant’s life has several facets. Through their work most migrants contribute to developing the prosperity both of their host country and of their country of origin. In the event of conflicts and natural disasters, however, migrants should be regarded as victims, and in this vulnerable situation need special protection.

SDC deals with these different aspects of migration. In addition to its work in the field, it actively participates in the political dialogue on this subject. Its commitment can be summarised under the following six headings.

International dialogue on migration

The SDC seeks global solutions and takes an active part in structuring the political dialogue on migration and development at the international level.

Refugees and internally displaced persons

SDC is involved in the protection of refugees and internally displaced persons, and works to meet their basic needs.

The diaspora

The SDC creates favourable framework conditions, promotes exchanges and carries out innovative projects to enable the different migrant communities to contribute to the development of their countries of origin.

Labour migration

SDC helps to ensure that migrants are informed about their rights and enjoy decent working conditions.

Swiss foreign policy on migration

The SDC uses its experience and instruments to contribute to pursuing Switzerland’s migration policy interests within the context of interdepartmental cooperation.

The Regional Cooperation Council was officially launched in 2008 as the successor to the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe. The Berlin Process in 2014 gave a new impetus to the regional cooperation and positioned the Council as a medium for communication between the Western Balkan and the EU. It represents an important tool for fostering the stability in the region by bringing together 46 countries, international organisations and banks, mainly from the EU, South East Europe and Western Balkans.

Colombia: MIRE+, Assistance to Victims of Violence

01.10.2023 - 31.03.2025

The humanitarian crisis in Colombia continues despite growing efforts towards peace. In line with the Swiss interest to respond to humanitarian crises, SDC remains dedicated to supporting these communities, enhancing their individual and collective resilience. The project integrates humanitarian action with a developmental and peace orientation (nexus).

Decent Work Middle East

01.10.2023 - 30.09.2027

Migrant workers and refugees face obstacles to access decent work in the Middle East, one of the largest migrant hosting regions, which limits their ability to contribute to their countries of origin and destination. To maximize benefits of migration and reduce harm, Switzerland engages various public and private stakeholders for the promotion of decent working conditions in Jordan, Lebanon and the Gulf, through access to justice, migrant empowerment and addressing worker welfare in the green and just transition.

NGORC

MiRiDew - Migrant Rights and Decent Work

01.07.2023 - 31.12.2026

Remittances sent home by over 4 million migrant workers have significantly contributed to the economic development of Nepal. The proposed project will enhance the capacities of the Government of Nepal and strengthen mechanisms to better protect the rights of workers abroad. There will be a special focus on women’s need and the adverse effects of climate change exacerbating the vulnerability of migrants. The project capitalises on Switzerland’s longstanding engagement on labour migration in Nepal.

Moldova – Making the Most of Migration

01.06.2023 - 31.12.2026

With one third of Moldova’s population living abroad, the current country`s leadership is firmly committed to harness the development potential of migration. Switzerland will further support Moldova to ensure the sustainability of diaspora engagement models and to improve evidence-based governance through reliable demographic statistics, including migration trends.
