The SDC is committed to improving the education and vocational training system in Niger. Over 1.5 million young people living in rural areas currently have no access to education or vocational training. Their future ability to enter the labour market depends on good-quality basic education and vocational training tailored to their needs.

- Private and public stakeholders active in the field of vocational education are developing a broad range of high-quality training programmes adapted to the needs of young people and the local, regional and national markets.
- Vocational training is managed in an effective manner through local and national programmes that are both practical and geared towards meeting developments in market demand.
- Niger has significant human potential: over 500,000 youngsters aged 12 to 19 in the regions of Dosso and Maradi are waiting to start training that will enable them to enter the job market.
- Demand is greatest for farming, livestock production and rural craft trades, which are also the main avenue for young people who have so far had no schooling or training to join the labour market.

Niger has a population of 17 million people, the majority of whom live in rural areas. Despite urbanisation, this will continue to be the case over the next 30 years. The education and vocational training system currently in place in Niger is poorly adapted to and largely incompatible with vocational training programmes geared towards rural trades. Niger’s rapid population growth is putting increasing pressure on the existing education system and makes the integration of young people in the labour market a major challenge. As a result of a lack of vocational training places, their high cost and the mismatch between vocational training programmes and the needs of the rural population, young people in rural areas are being marginalised.
Good-quality education and vocational training systems developed in the rural regions of Dosso and Maradi enable young people to enter the job market by providing them with the basic knowledge and skills necessary to pursue a professional activity. Better integration of young people also contributes to the socio-economic development of these regions and strengthens the food security of the population.
Young men and women (aged 14 to 30) who have had no schooling or have left school in the regions of Dosso and Maradi; associations of artisans, farmers, livestock breeders, etc; training institutions and instructors.

In view of the above, the SDC decided to develop a variety of short-term training options tailored to specific target groups and socio-economic contexts which will ultimately give young people access to gainful employment.
