Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis took part in a UN Security Council ministerial debate on the rule of law in New York on 12 January. The head of the FDFA recalled that respect for the principles of the UN Charter is pivotal to peace and security in the world. Tomorrow, Mr Cassis will travel on to Washington, where he will meet with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

At its meeting on 11 January 2023, the Federal Council was briefed on Switzerland's initial work within the UN Security Council and key upcoming issues. Tomorrow, Thursday 12 January, head of the FDFA Ignazio Cassis will travel to New York to participate in a UN Security Council debate at the invitation of Japan, the current president. This ministerial-level debate will focus on promoting the rule of law among nations.

At its meeting on 16 November 2022, the Federal Council decided to consider the meeting of the Russian and American heads of state in Geneva on 16 June 2021 an 'extraordinary event' under the Federal Act on Measures to Safeguard Internal Security. This means that the Confederation will cover part of the costs of ensuring the security of the summit and its participants.

FDFA State Secretary Livia Leu met Deputy Secretary of State, Wendy R. Sherman, in Washington today for the second strategic partnership dialogue between Switzerland and the United States. They signed a memorandum of understanding setting out their intention to continue the dialogue on an annual basis. The meeting between Leu and Sherman covered the current geopolitical situation, namely the war in Ukraine, as well as the two countries' bilateral relations.

At its meeting on 31 August 2022, the Federal Council was informed about the outcome of the consultations with the Foreign Affairs Committees on the priorities for the 77th session of the UN General Assembly. The priorities have thus been definitively adopted.
The list of priorities demonstrates Switzerland's focus on addressing the impact of the armed conflict in Ukraine as well as promoting international law, an effective UN system, and sustainable development. President of the Confederation Ignazio Cassis will represent Switzerland at the high-level opening of the UN General Assembly, which is being held in New York from 19 to 21 September 2022.

President of the Confederation Ignazio Cassis took part on 2 August 2022 in the Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) in New York. In his speech, Mr Cassis emphasised that Russia's nuclear threats illustrated the need for a package of measures to reduce nuclear risks. Recent developments in Ukraine have also shown that civilian nuclear facilities must be protected in situations of armed conflict. Switzerland thus wants to ensure nuclear safety and security and give new impetus to nuclear disarmament. The Conference will end on 26 August.

Ms Amherd will attend the Munich Leaders Meeting, organised by the Munich Security Conference. The rest of the visit will focus on bilateral relations with the USA. Ms Amherd will meet Deputy Secretary of Defence Kathleen H. Hicks for bilateral talks and pay a visit to the company Lockheed Martin.
