Today, more than two thirds of the countries of the world have become abolitionist in law or practice which confirms a global trend towards abolition of the death penalty. Switzerland holds a principled position against the death penalty and is opposed to the use of capital punishment under any circumstances. No compelling evidence exists to show that the death penalty serves as a deterrent to crime more efficient than imprisonment. Furthermore, any errors - inevitable in any legal system - are irreversible. Switzerland will continue supporting the universal trend towards the eradication of the death penalty.

Public event
This Christmas carol is known throughout the world: on Christmas Eve “Silent night, holy night” rings out around the world in many different languages. Created 200 years ago in Austria when a priest from Salzburg, Joseph Mohr, and Franz Xaver Gruber, a teacher from Upper Austria, sang the song for the very first time at the St. Nikola Church in Oberndorf near Salzburg. Today, the song is performed in over 300 languages and dialects.
Spend an unforgettable evening and be uplifted by the 200th Anniversary celebration that will honour this much-loved Christmas song at Silent Night on Sunday, 2 December 2018 at 7:00pm, Church of Saint Teresa, 510 Kampong Bahru Road Singapore 099446. Swiss wines will be sponsored by the Embassy of Switzerland.
