Switzerland and Iran have maintained a regular political exchange of views for years on bilateral, multilateral and regional issues. Standpoints on specific matters are openly discussed, opposing positions explained and common ground explored. Amongst the issues discussed was the continuation of the trilateral humanitarian dialogue between Iran, Syria and Switzerland. These discussions aim to improve humanitarian access to the population in desperate need in Syria. The possibility of explorative talks on various aspects in the field of justice was also discussed. One of the main topics of the discussions was the human rights situation in Iran.
The two heads of delegation extensively discussed the status of the nuclear negotiations between Iran and the E3/EU+3 as well as between Iran and the IAEA. State Secretary Rossier also provided details of Switzerland’s involvement in the Ukrainian conflict. Other matters covered included the US protecting power mandate held by Switzerland in Iran, the various conflicts in the Middle East and the fight against terrorism.
This year’s political consultations were concluded with a courtesy visit by the Iranian delegation to State Secretary Marie-Gabrielle Ineichen-Fleisch from the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) as well as a meeting with Carlo Sommaruga, the Chair of the National Council’s Foreign Affairs Committee.
