Flood-control reconstruction of Lázbérc
During the very intense precipitations of May 2010, important structural elements of the Lázbérc reservoir were damaged due to the high run-off. The project renews and rehabilitates the damaged parts of the dam, such as the spillway, surface and underground drainage systems and the downstream canal. Thanks to this, 2’650 inhabitants of down-stream settlements are less threatened by a dam failure.

- The Lázbérc Reservoir was so damaged by the heavy rainfall in 2010 that rehabilitation became urgent
- Around 3,000 people benefit from the protective effect of the remediated reservoir
- Around 300 ha of farmland is protected from overflowing the reservoir
- The concrete structure of the overflow basin with an area of 3'700 m2 was newly constructed
- 50 linear metres of the underground drainage system have been rehabilitated
- A dredger was purchased for continuous maintenance
- A Hungarian expert for environmental protection accompanied the project
- During a project visit to EAWAG in Dübendorf, the Hungarian project managers convinced themselves that flood prevention and environmental protection are not contradictory, but can be treated in a complementary manner

Hintergrund |
The primary function of the Reservoir of Lázbérc is the drinking-water supply, but in addition it is supposed to fulfill a certain role to reduce flood level. The reservoir contains a storage volume of 6.2 million m3. However, during the heavy floods in May 2010, a total of 19 million m3 were discharged through the dam’s spillway in only two weeks’ time. Even if flood protection is only a secondary use of the reservoir, flood peaks might be reduced thanks to the reservoir. The extreme flooding in 2010 resulted in severe damages of the dam’s structure. The concrete structure of the spillway is in need of repair, seepage draining adjacent to the spillway has to be improved and the downstream canal / creek got severely eroded. |
Ziele |
The overall goal is to increase the flood safety of three settlements below the reservoir of Lázbérc. For this purpose, damages at the dam structure are repaired in order to reduce the danger of inundation respectively of a dam failure with a flood wave. |
Zielgruppen |
2'650 inhabitants in three downstream settlements with 300 ha of land; 100’000 inhabitants spread over 25 settlements in the Kazincbarcika micro-region who rely on drinking water supply from the reservoir; municipal, provincial and government authorities |
Aktivitäten |
The damages at the dam of the Lázbérc reservoir are repaired with the renewal of various concrete sections of the spillway structure in order to prevent further deterioration and ultimately collapse thereof. Furthermore, the surface and underground-drainage on the right-hand slope (adjacent to the spillway) is rehabilitated and the downstream flood release canal is renewed to avoid erosion at the foot of the dam. |
