CE continues to attend World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos

The Chief Executive, Mrs Carrie Lam, yesterday (January 25, Davos time) continued to attend the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland. Accompanied by the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Edward Yau, and the Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, Mr James Lau, she also met with the leadership of various economies and international organisations.

Switzerland and Hong Kong strengthen their cooperation in financial markets

Bern, 23.01.2018 - On 23 January 2018, Federal Councillor Ueli Maurer and Mrs Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of Hong Kong SAR, met in Bern to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the area of financial markets and to exchange views on international financial and tax matters. Authorities and private sector representatives from Hong Kong and Switzerland signed three Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) during the meeting.

In exactly one year from today, on 10 December 2018, Switzerland together with the international community will commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which 70 years after its adoption, remains of unequivocal relevance. Human rights are a necessity for our societies, an invaluable ingredient to boost peace and stability and to foster sustainable development. Human rights are at the heart of the values represented by Switzerland and its political model, which is founded on the principles of democracy, non-discrimination, gender equality, peaceful coexistence, and mutual respect among people having different religious, linguistic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Switzerland calls upon its partners to join it in making this Human Rights Day 2017 a day of unequivocal relevance for the promotion and the protection of human rights.

Since the last fashion event celebrating bilateral relations in 2015, Switzerland and China have established an Innovative Strategic Partnership and launched the Sino-Swiss Year of Tourism in 2016 and 2017 respectively. The two countries have been working closely to continue to create new paths of cooperation.

President Leuthard attending ‘Belt and Road Initiative’ (BRI) summit in Beijing

The summit on the ‘Belt and Road Initiative’ (BRI) in Beijing concluded on Monday, 15 May. Around 28 heads of state and government took part with President Doris Leuthard representing Switzerland. The aim of the BRI or Silk Road summit was to strengthen trade links, particularly between Asia and Europe, and to discuss the interlinking of continents. Switzerland welcomes the initiative as it can help to strengthen prosperity along the various trade routes and enhance relations between continents, in particular by encouraging exchanges at a cultural level and in relation to tourism and research.

China and Switzerland conduct human rights dialogue

The 15th round of human rights dialogue between Switzerland and China took place from 2 to 3 March in Bern. The confidential discussions allowed an open, constructive and mutually critical debate to take place on the human rights situation in both countries. The focus was on human rights issues such as the judicial and penal system, including the death penalty, the rights of minorities and strengthening the international human rights protection system.

Literary salons, film screenings, rendezvous with award-winning filmmakers,pop concerts, and singing along popular tunes of French songs in Karaokes are just some of the highlights of Switzerland’s participation at this year’s Fête de la Francophonie (Francophonie Festival). In March, on the occasion of the 22nd edition of the Francophonie Festival in China, the Embassy of Switzerland and its consulates general will be joining hands with the official presentations of other Francophonie countries in China to present a series of film, literary, music, culinary, art events and activities that reflect the diversity of the Francophone world. The aim of the three-week celebration is to promote the French culture and its heritage, French language learning as well as to improve cross-cultural understanding.

Chinese President XI Jinping ends state visit to Switzerland

The Chinese president, XI Jinping, ended his state visit to Switzerland on Wednesday and was seen off by Federal Councillor Alain Berset, the vice president of the Federal Council, in Geneva. Earlier Federal Councillor Berset and President XI Jinping met for informal talks with the new UN secretary general, António Guterres.
