The Zurich Youth Symphony Orchestra (ZYSO) was founded 1987 by English conductor Howard Griffith at the Zurich Conservatory of Music. Soon it started evolving from string orchestra to a full-size 70-piece orchestra. The orchestra's repertoire includes s a great spectrum of styles and high technical demands from Baroque to contemporary music, featuring monumental works of all the great composers. The ZYSO is fully aware of the importance of a well-balanced program, designed to appeal both to the musically experienced and to the not (yet) initiated audience. The musicians (currently between 14 and 24 years of age, levels advanced to semi pro) find a rich educational and supportive environment at ZYSO. As a result the musicians display technical and musical maturity, but also freshness and joy in their performances. The ZYSO is a flagship ensemble of Musikschule Konservatorium Zürich (MKZ) with 22'000 students of all ages and levels of proficiency.
