From 2016-2019, the Swiss artist/researcher Catherine Gfeller travelled several times to different cities in China, where she met quite a lot of women with various background. She spent days or nights talking with them, taking their photos and videos, getting to know their working environment or favourite places for entertainment, etc., in order to understand their personal point of view when they are immersed in the city with all their senses. Instead of a documentary report, Catherine Gfeller does her own exploration and reinterpretation from a more artistic vision. A dialogue is then formed between her as a foreign female artist and the Chinese women that she interviewed and filmed.
An exhibition with all those materials will be open to the public at the Embassy of Switzerland in Beijing, China. This is the first time that the Embassy has an exhibition alongside the Embassy outside wall.
The project is in line with the Swiss embassy’s 2023 ‘Diversity & Me’ Campaign while putting the spotlight on “Gender equality”.
Date: Now – March 31, 2024
Place: Outside wall, Embassy of Switzerland in China, 3 Sanlitun Dongwujie, Chaoyang District
