The Government of Switzerland, EU and UN support young scientists in Tajikistan

On 4 October 2022, the Government Switzerland along with EU funded project implemented by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) held a workshop for young scientists on “Early warning and early action for all” in Dushanbe.

The event was as a part of activities to mark the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction celebrated globally on 13 October.

The workshop aimed to raise awareness of academia and the scientific community about disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation and the importance of early warning systems in facilitating early actions for saving lives.

The event brought together more than 50 representatives of the Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense of the Government of Tajikistan (CoES), the Ministry of Education, the Expert Group of the National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Academy of Science, other research institutes, international partners, and the media.

 Ms. Salome Steib, Director, the Swiss Cooperation Office highlighted:

“Switzerland will undoubtedly continue to promote and contribute to sustainable development in the field of Disaster Risk Reduction in the country. Tajikistan’s future will heavily depend on young scientists; therefore Switzerland empowers Young Scientists, particularly women, and will make sure the respect for their rights, without leaving no one behind”  

The Swiss Government is one of the active donor in disaster risk reduction and climate change sector in Tajikistan. For the last 30 years, annually an average of CHF 1,5 mio has been allocated for the DRR and climate change programmes for the country. Within its Cooperation program for Central Asia (2022-2025), Switzerland will continue to contribute to sustainable development with particular focus on DRR, climate change and transboundary water management to alleviate suffering and build resilience of vulnerable communities in Tajikistan.
