ICRC Add. Contrib. Sudan Crisis NK, SUD, SSD, Chad

SDC funding to ICRC operations allows the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to respond proactively and to provide immediate protection and assistance for people affected by armed conflict and other situations of violence such as Sudan. In line with the Good Humanitarian Donorship (GHD) principles, Switzerland recognizes the necessity of predictable and flexible funding to respond to changing needs in humanitarian crises.

Since April 2023, the ongoing conflict in Sudan has caused a humanitarian catastrophe of massive magnitude within the country. It has also deeply affected the neighbouring countries, in particular the most fragile ones such as Chad, South Sudan and the Central African Republic, which were already facing levels of severe food insecurity. With no end in sight to the conflict, Swiss additional funding supports WFP operations in Sudan and in the region to deliver much needed life-saving food and nutrition assistance.

After more than 31 months of war, Sudan faces the world’s largest humanitarian and displacement crisis. Over 30 million people need assistance, and 12 million have been forcibly displaced, including 4.3 million across borders - mainly to Egypt, Chad, and South Sudan. Inside Sudan, bureaucratic hurdles, financial collapse, market disruptions, and insecurity hinder aid efforts. Through its Regional Response Plan 2026 - Sudan, NRC aims to assist over 296,280 conflict-affected people, prioritizing those with the most severe needs.


SSD, Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP): Community-based Protection and Peacebuilding

The intervention strengthens protection of civilians and civic space in South Sudan by empowering human rights defenders, journalists, and community protection teams to prevent violence and defend fundamental freedoms. Its focus is on skills building, direct protection, and coordinated advocacy. By progressively localising capacities and reinforcing national networks, the project, implemented by Nonviolent Peaceforce, pursues sustainability and contributes to peace and resilience in a fragile and volatile context.


SSD, Inkomoko: Financial Inclusion and Business Growth

01.08.2025 - 31.01.2028

The project intends to improve social integration and economic self-reliance for displacement affected people and host communities in Gorom and Mangala area in Juba County, South Sudan. This intervention, which is being  implemented by  Inkomoko will  focus on market-led private sector solutions that strengthen  local micro small & medium enterprises (MSMEs) by providing access to inclusive finances (loans), coaching and mentoring, especially for women and youth. 


SSD, Concordis - Building resilience in Abyei and the surrounding borderlands of Sudan and South Sudan

SCO Juba contributes to an intervention of Concordis International, aiming at strengthening resilience to conflict and climate shocks across Abyei and the Sudan–South Sudan borderlands. The 4-year project focuses on inclusive peacebuilding, intercommunal dialogue, and cross-border market cooperation. It addresses the intertwined risks of displacement, resource competition, and political manipulation in this contested region.


SSD, VSF-Suisse: Enhancing Agro-Pastoral Food Security, Livelihoods and Protection in South Sudan Phase III

The contribution of Switzerland supports vulnerable food-insecure agro-pastoralist communities in conflict affected and displacement prone areas of South Sudan. VSF Suisse is investing in sustainable agriculture and natural resource management by strengthening animal health and livestock and crop value chains. In addition, the intervention addresses protection concerns (focus women and children) and contributes to social cohesion.


SSD: Peace Canal, Peace in Practice (PiP)

Switzerland contributes to the Peace in Practice project in the Warrap and Lakes States of South Sudan. The project is a community-led initiative to reduce intercommunal violence that is implemented by national NGOs Peace Canal and The Organisation for Children's Harmony (TOCH).  It aims  to strengthen  traditional governance,  to enhance protection, and  to promote shared livelihoods through empowering women and youth and rebuilding local peace structures.


SSD, Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA): Enhancing Food Security, Livelihoods and Protection of vulnerable communities in Lakes State

01.06.2025 - 31.05.2028

Switzerland’s contribution to Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA), aims to improve food security and livelihoods among vulnerable IDPs, returnees, refugees and host households1 in Lakes State of South Sudan. It enhances the safety, as well as the psychosocial and economic empowerment of SGBV2 survivors, mostly adolescent girls. It will also improve survivors access to basic and legal services. Peacebuilding activities are promoted among youth and women for resilient communities.

Through the proposed project, Switzerland contributes to 2 local NGOs in the north west of South Sudan, in line with ongoing localization of aid efforts. The proposed intervention combines both protection and livelihoods interventions to address the urgent needs of refugees and returnees fleeing from the Sudan conflict and vulnerable host communities in Raja, a fairly remote and high need location with little humanitarian presence.


Provision of basic services in northern parts of South Sudan in response to the influx of civilian population fleeing the Sudan conflict

Switzerland supports ACTED’s operations in northern South Sudan (Renk, Aweil East and Manyo counties) to provide dignified shelter and essential services to civilians fleeing the conflict in Sudan. The intervention also includes targeted support to host communities, aiming to strengthen social cohesion in an increasingly fragile context.


South Sudan, Swisspeace: Renewable Energy and Peace Education in South Sudan (REPOS)

01.02.2025 - 31.01.2027

swisspeace will review the curriculum of Institute of Peace, Development and Security Studies (IPDSS) of the University of Juba (UoJ). The curriculum will promote good governance, peacebuilding and  conflict  transformation  and  quality  teaching. Access  to  electricity will  be  promoted  by  training students of the faculty of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) with the skills of installing and maintaining photovoltaic system, which also offers them employment opportunities.
