What is the goal?

Democratic governance is strengthened through increased accountability in local public institutions, inclusive services and empowered civil society.

What shall be achieved?

Democratic institutions: Democratic institutions adhere to the principles of transparency, accountability and equal participation of women and men.

Enhanced social and environmental protection for the people: Citizens benefit from inclusive social services and a cleaner environment in their local communities.

Civil society and oversight actors perform their democratic role: Informed citizens and oversight bodies engage in decision making, collaborate with public institutions and hold them to account.

The objective of governance is to create an environment that strengthens rule of law and human rights, gender equality, appropriate distribution of power and macro-economic stability. Governance is a strategic objective of SDC development cooperation.
