The project will be carried out in the district of Tal Afar. More than 100’000 people have returned to this district since it was retaken from ISIL on 31 August 2017. Public services are extremely limited, key infrastructure has been neglected and damaged during the recent military operations. The water network within Tal Afar city has been severely damaged and the Water Treatment Plant is currently out of order. Conflict-affected children have had irregular or no access to education since ISIL took over Tal Afar district in 2014. The restauration of the public education system is a priority for the Directorate of Education which calls for rehabilitation work and minor repairs to be carried out in schools across the district.
Local authorities currently lack the necessary resources to re-launch these key public services and there are currently very few humanitarian actors intending to address these needs within Tal Afar district.
