Ukraine UNOCHA Humanitarian Fund 2022

After almost 8 years, the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine continues to significantly impact the local population with an estimated 3.4 million people that are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance and protection. To help address unmet emergency and humanitarian needs, respond to potential emerging needs, foster the resiliene of conflict-affected communities and strengthen the humanitarian-development nexus Switzerland contributes for one year to the Ukraine Humanitarian Fund (UHF).

FfD Financing for Development 2022-2024

The United Nations (UN) estimate the financing gap for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at $2.5 trillion per year with an additional shortfall for 2020 of $1.7 trillion due to Covid-19. Financing for Development (FfD) is therefore a core issue for the UN. This credit proposal contributes to make the intergovernmental process of FfD more evidence-based, inclusive and participatory, with a focus on Switzerland’s priority themes: private sector engagement and multi-stakeholder partnerships.

Partnership Fund for a Resilient Ukraine

With a contribution to the Partnership Fund for a Resilient Ukraine (PFRU), Switzerland aims at strengthening communities and at enhancing government legitimacy in Eastern Ukraine through improved services, economic recovery and empowered civil society. The PFRU is an innovative multi-donor financing tool which focuses on supporting the implementation of reforms in the conflict-affected areas of the country through an integrated approach (humanitarian-development-peace nexus). The PFRU unites five development partners (UK, US, Canada, Sweden, Switzerland) and it is co-owned by the Government of Ukraine.

Réponse au cyclone Batsirai à Madagascar

Madagascar est menacé par le cyclone Batsirai. Les dégâts et l’impact humanitaire sont considérés comme potentiellement importants vu la puissance du cyclone et la vulnérabilité de la population exposée. En renforçant ses partenaires établis sur place par l’envoi d’experts, de matériel et de ressources financières, l’aide humanitaire suisse contribue à la réponse d’urgence. La priorité est donnée et à une intervention préliminaire basée sur l’eau et l’assainissement. Suivant l’évolution de la situation, d’autres actions pourront au besoin être décidées.

WFP Contribution 2022 to Support WFP’s Operation in Ukraine

In Ukraine WFP decided shortly after the outbreak of war, to respond to the food security challenges in the country by temporarily amplifying the capacity of the humanitarian system for an initial period of three months, to fill gaps in the response to crisis-affected populations through cash-based transfers and in-kind food assistance and support other humanitarian agencies through logistics support. A first Limited Emer-gency Operation (LEO) has been designed and extended twice in the following months.


Appui à la mise en œuvre de la politique agricole de l’Afrique de l’Ouest (ECOWAP)

En Afrique de l’Ouest, plus de 64 % de la population a moins de 24 ans. La faiblesse des chaînes de valeur agricoles ne permet pas à ces jeunes d’accéder à des emplois décents. La Suisse soutient la création d’emplois rémunérateurs dans la filière lait local au profit des jeunes. Elle compte sur l’effet levier de son action pour contribuer à réduire l'exode rural et l'émigration non contrôlée et offrir aux jeunes des alternatives à l'adhésion aux groupes violents.


Support to Village Councils – Area C Infrastructure

Switzerland fosters the resilience of marginalised communities in Area C of the West Bank by enhancing planning capacities of local authorities and improving the access to basic infrastructure in partnership with UNHABITAT and the Municipal Development and Lending Fund MDLF. SDC’s contribution is part of a wider donor engagement in Area C to Leave No One Behind. A stronger accent is put in this third and final phase on active participation of women and youth in the selection and social auditing of infrastructure projects.


Nurture - Nurturing climate resilience in Cambodia

Switzerland and the Swiss NGOs HEKS and Caritas, in cooperation with the Ministries of Agriculture and of Water, support smallholder farmers and their communities with Swiss expertise on sustainable water resource management, increased social accountability for climate change adaptation and disaster risk management and diversified incomes using agro-ecological production. Some 70,500 men and women in four provinces highly vulnerable to climate change and disasters will benefit.

Festival del Film Locarno 2022-2024

As part of sustainable development, the promotion of cultural diversity is rooted in the Swiss Constitution. Switzerland’s support for artists from Africa, Latin America, Asia, and Eastern Europe is promoting the diversity of analysis of social issues, thereby ensuring the fundamental values ​​of the democratic system. The partnership between SDC and the Locarno Film Festival supports independent film production through the special section Open Doors. Participants from Latin America gain visibility, network, knowledge and opportunities for filmmaking.


Global Energy Efficiency and Construction Outreach Programme (GLECOP)

The Global Energy Efficiency and Construction Outreach Programme (GLECOP) contributes to low-emission, energy-efficient and resilient development of the building sector at a global scale. It supports two initiatives, the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction and the Energy Efficiency in Emerging Economies Programme. With its support, Switzerland aims to leverage successful practices from its bilateral projects at the global level to strengthen energy efficiency policies in the buildings sector.


Single Phase - City-to-City Partnership Hawassa – Lugano

Il contributo appoggia il gemellaggio innovativo tra un comune svizzero, Lugano, ed uno etiope, Hawassa, al fine di migliorare, al livello subnazionale, l’approvvigionamento dell'acqua potabile sia quantitativamente che qualitativamente, in accordo con gli Obiettivi di Sviluppo Sostenibile 6.1 e 6.3. Il partenariato è coadiuvato dalla collaborazione scientifica tra le due università locali, l’Università di Hawassa e la Scuola universitaria professionale della Svizzera italiana (SUPSI).

Lugano Summer School

The Lugano Summer School in Public Health Policy, Economics and Management is an international hub for post-graduate short-term training in public health attracting practitioners and academics from around the world, in the spirit of mutual learning. This is one product of the Swiss School of Public Health consortium (SSPH+) portfolio. SDC scholarship support to the LSS facilitates participation to an expanding campus on public health and international recognition of expertise from low and middle-income countries since over 20 years.
