Health Sector Reform Support Program (Health Basket)

Despite significant progress in the reduction of child mortality (MGD 4) and in the control of communicable diseases (MDG 6) over the last decade, Tanzania needs to sustain its gains and renew efforts in order to reach the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) targets by 2015. Well-organized policy dialogue (SWAp) together with pooled funding (Health Basket Fund) have largely contributed to current health results. SDC long-standing political and financial support to the health sector is proposed to be renewed.

Contribution au programme du Pôle de compétence en genre et développement en Suisse romande

Ce programme répond au besoin d’accroissement des compétences et capacités pour l’intégration transversale de la dimension genre au sein des études et de la pratique du développement. Cette contribution permettra au Pôle genre et développement (PG) de l’Institut des Hautes Etudes Internationales et du Développement (IHEID) de renforcer sa fonction de réservoir d'idées pour la DDC sur les questions conceptuelles et méthodologiques relatives au genre et développement et de renforcer les systèmes d’échange entre académie et pratique.

Central Firearms Register

The project intends to create a Central Firearms Register (CFR) in the Czech Republic for a centralized registration and monitoring of movements of all civilian firearms on the territory of the CR. The project will contribute to the consolidation of the security situation and will allow the fulfilment of international obligations of the CR in this field.

Support for agricultural cooperatives and small farmers through an investment fund (FODEAL II)

The programme intends to reach a significant increase in local milk and meat production, in the 14 municipalities of the Holguín province (1 200 000 inhabitants). By acceding to investments, training in entrepreneurship and efficient use of bank credits, small farmers, cooperatives and enterprises of the agricultural and livestock sectors will produce and earn more. Through the partner organization, the Cuban Association for Animal Production ACPA, the experiences of the FODEAL programme will be spread over the whole country.

L’insécurité de l’eau est source ou élément d’instabilité sociale et politique à grande échelle avec des répercussions sur la paix et la sécurité dans le monde. Le projet soutiendra l’élaboration d’un cadre global pour l’eau et la sécurité, ainsi que la mise en place d’une plateforme globale dans le cadre de la Genève internationale, le Water Pôle Eau. Cette plateforme se profilera comme un centre de compétence sur l’eau et la paix, mettant à l’échelle mondiale l’approche Blue Peace pour favoriser un dialogue entre les acteurs politiques, socio-économiques et du secteur de l’eau.

Support to the Creation of Second-tier Cooperatives in the Farming Sector in Cuba

The programme promotes the establishment of non-state organizations (second-tier cooperatives) for the provision of services and products to improve the productivity of small farmers and agricultural cooperatives. These early experiences in the country will provide for learning experiences that will facilitate the development of these self-managed organizations and will contribute to food security.

Enhancing Mechanical Demining in Mozambique

This project aims at ridding Mozambique from its remaining landmines by the “Ottawa Treaty” deadline until March 2014. There are still 15.5 km2 to be cleared and released before this deadline. In order to accelerate the process, Switzerland is enhancing mechanical demining by contributing to the purchase of a demining device (3rd generation machine built by the Swiss Foundation Digger). This initiative is fully in line with the Swiss “Mine Action Strategy 2012-2016” and will contribute to the socio-economic development of Mozambique.

Consequences of the war in the former Yugoslavia are felt in BiH until today. A significant part of the population suffers from mental health problems. In line with the European Convention on Human Rights, people with mental disorders committing crimes have the right to adequate treatment in custody. SDC and SECO therefore support the opening of the first Institute for Forensic Psychiatry in BiH, from whose services up to 200 convicts with mental disorders from across BiH will benefit.

Improving access to safe drinking water systems and hygiene practices in mountain regions of Tajikistan – Rasht Valley

Despite sufficient water resources available in Tajikistan, access to safe drinking water remains an important challenge in the country. The project will focus on improving access to safe drinking water for people in mountain areas through the installation or rehabilitation of drinking water systems. It will cover 50 villages with a total population of approximately 45,000 people, thus also contributing to a reduction in water borne diseases in the targeted regions. By focusing on the most neglected and fragile areas, Switzerland supports the efforts of re-connecting the communities and the State and thus of reducing conflict potential and strengthening stability in Tajikistan.

Integrated Health and Habitat Improvement in the Rasht Valley, Tajikistan

Tajikistan is the poorest country of the former Soviet Union and is marked by a sluggish transition and fragility patterns. This project contributes to improving the Rasht Valley (the most neglected and fragile area of the country) population’s quality of life through better provision of and access to water and health services, as well as increased resilience against natural hazards. Moreover, it enhances professional skills and empowers the local population in planning and investing in its communities.

Local Migration Governance

Morocco, Egypt and Tunisia are strongly affected by migration. Local authorities are interested in acquiring the necessary skills to better use this migration for local development. Therefore, the SDC Global Program for Migration and Development has tasked the Joint Migration for Development Initiative of the European Commission and the UNDP with providing local authorities in selected municipalities with the know-how on cooperating with other local governments and civil society organizations in order to use the potential of migration for the sustainable development of their municipalities.
