Closing Rice Yield Gaps in Asia

SDC supports the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and its national research and extension partners in six major rice granaries of Asia (China, Indonesia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam) to develop science-based, quantitative tools and participatory methods to i) generate evidence, and ii) optimize ‘integrated sustainable irrigated rice production systems’ in order to close rice yield gaps and thereby enhance regional and global food security while minimizing the environmental footprint of irrigated rice production.

IOM: Improved protection for irregular migrants from Sub-Sahara Africa in Southern Egypt

Due to recent measures to secure the Egypt-Sudan border, an increased number of migrants has been apprehended and transferred to ill-equipped prisons/ police stations where they spend protracted periods in extremely vulnerable conditions. Smuggling and trafficking network have expanded over the last year. The proposed project will provide assistance to stranded migrants and Egyptian communities in needs, as well as capacity building efforts for government and NGOs to provide migrant-friendly healthcare services.

Fostering Regional and Local Development in Georgia

Contribution to Fair and Free Local Elections 2013

The contribution to three Civil Society Organisations (CSO) aims at promoting fair and free local elections in Macedonia in 2013. The campaigns shall be supporting an atmosphere of fair, free and non-violent elections and at increasing the number of female candidates at the mayoral elections. In addition, the campaigns include the promotion of public debates between mayoral candidates, activities related to prevent the use of weapons and violence during the election campaign and on the voting day, and monitoring of the voting process.

Lao Extension for Agriculture Project ( LEAP )

Laos is a nation of small farmers with 74% of the workforce employed in the agriculture sector. LEAP was designed to address the low levels of productivity and profitability for the farmers and focused on the weak capacity of extension services. After 11 years of successful work in strengthening the national extension system and moving ahead to open it to other service providers, LEAP will close its operations after a 14 months final phase, mostly dedicated to handover and capitalization activities.

Rehabilitation of WASH infrastructure in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa after the Floods 2010

The floods 2010 badly damaged private and public infrastructure and aggravated the already high incidence of water-borne diseases in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK). The project aims to improve WASH and in particular the access to safe drinking water along with capacity building measures for the service providers (operation & maintenance, water quality monitoring) and the beneficiaries (water treatment and hygiene). The project targets households, public institutions (schools and hospitals) and community water schemes.

Financial support to the Health Sector Pool Fund (HSPF)

In post-conflict Liberia, the National Health Plan sets out a process for transitioning from emergency to sustainability under government leadership. The Liberia Health Sector Pool Fund (HSPF), which consists of DFID, Irish Aid, UNICEF, UNHCR, France and Switzerland, was established to fund this plan and mitigate this transition by increasing institutional capacity, reducing the transaction costs associated with managing multiple donor projects, and fostering the leadership of the Liberian Ministry of Health (MoH) by allocating funds to national priorities.

Support to the Reform of the Northern Agriculture and Forestry College in Laos (SURAFCO)

Innovation and reform of the agriculture sector is necessary for Lao PDR to achieve socioeconomic growth and graduate from its status of Least Developed Country. SDC has worked to strengthen Lao agriculture and forestry colleges since 2009, in response to a growing need for highly skilled professionals, who can help farmers in improving their practices and escape poverty.

Sanitation, Hygiene, Infant Nutrition Efficacy Project (SHINE)

The Sanitation, Hygiene, Infant Nutrition Efficacy Project (SHINE) intents to reduce infant mortality and improve primary health care in rural Zimbabwe. Four different types of public health programs will be compared in two districts of the Midlands province in order to identify the most effective in combating child stunting and anemia. SOC's earmarked contribution to this project will benefit 2,400 households with pregnant women and focus on delivering soft component (knowledge and best hygiene practices) of the WASH module.

Short Term Food Security Support in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is on a path of transition in which SDC supports the increase of food security, the strengthening of livelihoods and self-reliance of the most vulnerable populations. In the past agricultural season the production fell by 33% and 19% of the rural population will be unable to meet their basic food requirements. In this context, the support to WFP combines emergency oriented short term targeted relief assistance with an approach oriented towards medium term solutions to food insecurity.

Quality Life despite Disease

The project aims at providing a dignified environment for seniors with dementia in the Special Needs Home in Ostrava by reconstructing the attic of an existing Day-Care Centre. In addition, constructional adjustments of the whole building will permit to provide an adequate barrier-free infrastructure for the clients. Together with the necessary training of staff, this will allow for introducing modern care methods for seniors with dementia. Furthermore, the capacity of the in-home social services will be increased by the procurement of additional vehicles.
