UNICEF Strengthening peace building and Recovery Results for Children and Women - SDC Global Institutions Support

One billion children live in areas affected by conflict and high levels of violence. The changing nature of conflicts and the fragility of states are a big challenge for recovery and peace-building. The operational presence of UNICEF before, during and after conflicts makes it a key stakeholder with competence in transition from emergency and recovery to development. This project strengthens the rights of children in fragile and post crisis situations by building up systematic capacities and learning in conflict sensitivity, peace building and recovery in fragile contexts.

UNHCR Provision of winterized assistance to IDPs in Syria [BSL]

The deteriorating security situation in Syria has led to the internal displacement of 9.3 million individuals seeking refuge with host families, in public buildings, schools or in open space. For the winter period the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has developed a winterization strategy to address the basic humanitarian needs of internally displaced persons (IDPs). With the support of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), UNHCR will be able to provide winterized non-food items (NFIs) to families facing harsh winter conditions.

The conflict has been ruining the lives and Iivelihoods of millions. In addition, lt has disrupted power supplies, affecting in turn water services, forcing responsible technical staff of the water authorities to regularly run maintenance and operations of infrastructure of basic services. Safe drinking water, proper sanitation, and hygiene conditions have been negatively impacted, especially in the crowded collective shelters. This Intervention comes as a response to the assessment of Hassakeh City that indicates shortage in water supply as weIl as access to adequate hygiene and sanitation services for Internally displaced persons ( IDPs) and host communities (HC).

Contribution to the IFRC Emergency Appeal for the Philippines: Typhoon Haiyan

Since the Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines on 08.11.2013, an intense RCRC relief operation has been deployed in the most affected regions. SDC, while supporting a strengthened coordination among the RCRC components, enhances a local response while reinforcing the Philippine Red Cross capacity building in natural disaster.

The project will contribute to the transition towards a free market system in target communities in central Azerbaijan through a sustainable increase of incomes of male and female farmers in animal husbandry using a market development approach. The central part of Azerbaijan has a good potential for inclusive growth in agriculture. However, lack of proper markets, services and knowledge prevent poor farmers to gain better incomes.

Rural Water and Sanitation Support Programme Kosovo (RWSSP V)

Since 2005, the Swiss Rural Water and Sanitation Support Programme has provided access to safe drinking water and sanitation to more than 150,000 people living in rural area. The programme is building infrastructure, strengthening managing capacity, and developing the sector framework conditions. It is expected that by 2017, 320,000 people will benefit and that the Regional Water Companies maintain effectively the water networks.

A causa del complesso e difficile contesto politico e amministrativo, i Comuni della Bosnia e Erzegovina si trovano ad affrontare sfide importanti per poter offrire servizi adeguati ai cittadini, che a loro volta si sentono ignorati dalla politica. I livelli amministrativi locali sono considerati i più dinamici e ricettivi per dare voce alle esigenze dei cittadini, motivo per cui il progetto «Strengthening the Role of Local Communities» mira a potenziare le comunità locali (le cosiddette «mjesne zajednice», o semplicemente MZ) al fine di sensibilizzare la popolazione e promuoverne la partecipazione e l’inclusione sociale nei processi di sviluppo a livello locale.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) is seeking Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC’s) support in funding to provide critical assistance to internally displaced persons (IDPs) who have been severely affected by the conflict in Syria to support them in meeting their winterisation needs. This is a vital form of resilience-building support for vulnerable Palestine refugees in Syria and will help them to survive the winter.

Armenia‘s capacities on locat level are insufficient for an appropriate disaster management. The vulnerability of the peopte can be substantially reduced when they are weil informed and motivated towards a culture of prevention and resilience, This requires collection, compilation and dissemination of knowiedge on hazards, vulnerabitities and capacities. The project‘s focus is on the elaboration of a consolidated methodology on Community Based Disaster Risk Assessment, capacity building of locat authorities and on the coordination between bocal, regional and national stakeholders for further DRR actions.

Mountains are key contexts for sustainable development due to the provision of indispensable goods and services. Still, they are among the most disadvantaged regions in the world. As a mountain country, Switzerland has an intrinsic interest and a proven track record in Sustainable Mountain Development (SMD). With the new SMD4GC programme, SDC will continue its support to SMD to increase the resilience of the mountain population, which is increasingly vulnerable due to the ongoing global changes.
