The European Union Delegation to Singapore in agreement with the EU Heads of Mission, and the Heads of Mission of Norway and Switzerland issue the following statement:The European Union (EU), Norway and Switzerland call on the Singapore authorities to halt the execution of Nigerian national Mr Chijioke Stephen Obioha and to adopt a moratorium on all executions as a first step towards the abolition of the death penalty.The EU, Norway and Switzerland hold a principled position against the death penalty and are opposed to the use of capital punishment under any circumstances. The death penalty has not been shown in any way to act as a deterrent to crime. Furthermore, any errors - inevitable in any legal system - are irreversible. The EU, Norway and Switzerland will continue in their pursuit of the abolition of the death penalty worldwide.

On the 3rd of September, SWISS International Airlines launched its flagship aircraft, the Boeing 77-300ER, on the Singapore-Zurich flight. On this occasion, from 4th to 5th of October, Switzerland Tourism together with SWISS organises a two-day event at Raffles Place to promote winter vacation in Switzerland and how to get there with the new flagship aircraft. Visitors can participate in a Swiss chocolate experience, ice sculpture challenge or a flight simulation and will get a chance to win a trip to Switzerland!

The Swiss Army Band will perform at the annual Swiss National Day celebration at the Swiss Club. Besides playing traditional music, the musicians include modern and local songs in their repertoire. A great way to celebrate the Swiss National Day in Singapore!

State visit
Singapore President Tony Tan and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong shared about their meetings with Swiss President Schneider-Ammann on their respective Facebook pages. Both figures highlighted the warm bilateral relations between Switzerland and Singapore in many areas, including economic, education and research.

State visit
Between Monday, 11 July, and Wednesday, 13 July, Singapore will host a state visit for a Swiss president for the first time. This is an expression of the close cooperation between the two countries and comes ahead of the 50th anniversary of bilateral relations in 2017.
The European Union Delegation to Singapore issues the following statement in agreement with the EU Heads of Mission and the Embassy of Switzerland:The European Union (EU) and Switzerland call on the Cabinet to grant clemency to 32 year old Malaysian Kho Jabing. The EU, its Member States and Switzerland continue to call on the Singaporean authorities to adopt a moratorium on executions.
Switzerland’s oldest symphony orchestra is coming to Singapore for a concert. The musicians combine a classical-romantic repertoire with undaunted curiosity. They have gained an international standing that extends far beyond its home territory. Strongly anchored in Lucerne, a city with a worldwide reputation for music, the Orchestra offers a number of annual concert cycles and acts as the orchestra-in-residence of the Lucerne Theatre.

Official visit
Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin, Minister of Defence, Civil Protection and Sports, attended the Shangri-La Dialogue, on June 4-5. This was his first visit to Singapore for the Shangri-La Dialogue, the most important inter-governmental security forum of the Asia-Pacific region held annually in Singapore. During his visit, Federal Councillor Parmelin also met his counterpart Singaporean Minister of Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen. The two Ministers underlined the excellent bilateral relations between our countries and both emphasized the potential for further collaboration in international cooperation and multi-lateral organizations such as ASEAN and the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM). The key role of facilitators that both countries can undertake when international disputes arise was also highlighted as one of the fields shared by both Singapore and Switzerland. Federal Councillor Parmelin also attended the official dinner at the Istana offered by Singapore President Dr. Tony Tan.During his visit, Federal Councillor Parmelin had the opportunity to have special meetings with some other of his counter-parts, as from Canada, India, Republic of Korea and the United Kingdom.Before returning to Switzerland, Mr. Parmelin met with the Swiss Community at the Ambassador’s residence.
