“Jakob von Gunten”, a great novel of the Swiss author Robert Walser, has been translated into Icelandic. The novel is written as a diary of the protagonist Jakob von Gunten, a student at a servant’s school, a school preparing for a life as a servant. The education of this school with strict principles is a central issue in the book. Besides the experiences of the boy the reader is also informed about the dreams of Jakob von Gunten. In 1905, Walser was at a servant’s school himself.
