The project aims at increasing the fire safety of children in general education institutions in peripheral and disadvantaged regions of Latvia. It shall improve safety of children in case of fire in 138 general education institutions and widen knowledge about fire safety by utilising and building on Swiss experience.

December 2010 saw the delivery to Latvia of the last of 110 school buses funded by the Swiss-Latvian cooperation programme. These buses enable the organisation of an effective school transportation system in disadvantaged rural regions of the country.

The number and complexity of court proceedings in Latvia is increasing while courts are not equipped with the necessary new technologies to meet adequately the demands placed on them. The Project aims to improve the capacity and the quality of the judiciary. New communication technologies (audio, video conference, internet) and more efficient court procedures will contribute to reaching this goal.

The bilateral Framework Agreement foresees the possibility of utilizing a maximum of 1.5% of the total allocation to cover certain management costs in the beneficiary country. Despite major reforms by the New EU Member States to their legal and regulatory frameworks governing corporate sector accounting and auditing, there is a substantial unfinished institutional development agenda in the field of financial reporting. The Financial Reporting Technical Assistance Program provides support to five national administrations (in Latvia as well as in the Czech Republic, Estonia, Poland, Slovenia) which face capacity constraints and challenges in fully implementing – both in law and in practice – the very demanding obligations imposed by the rapidly-evolving acquis communautaire in this field.
