Ignazio Cassis inaugurates new Swiss embassy in Moscow and meets Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov

Press releases, 13.06.2019

Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis will pay a working visit to Russia from 18 to 19 June 2019. The visit will focus on a working meeting with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and the inauguration of the new Swiss embassy building in Moscow.

At the meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on 19 June 2019, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis will discuss, among other things, relations between Switzerland and Russia, which are wide-ranging and maintained at all levels on the basis of a 2007 memorandum of understanding. Multilateral issues and the current geopolitical situation will also be on the agenda. Mr Cassis last met Mr Lavrov in Geneva in November 2018 for extended bilateral talks.

On the day prior to the meeting, Mr Cassis will take part in the opening ceremony of the new Swiss embassy building in Moscow, accompanied by member of the Council of States Filippo Lombardi and National Councillor Fabian Molina. The new building is a major undertaking, combining extensive renovation and new construction of Switzerland's official representation in Russia, and underscores the importance and quality of the long-term relations between the two countries. Going forward, the embassy will bring together all federal actors – the Swiss diplomatic and consular representation, Swiss Business Hub, Pro Helvetia and Switzerland Tourism – under one roof, thus strengthening the coherence of Switzerland's commitment.
