At a time of far-reaching geopolitical developments, the Federal Council is sending a clear signal in support of freedom of navigation and international law. At its meeting on 13 May 2026, it approved Switzerland's accession to the Protocol to the Treaty Concerning the Permanent Neutrality and Operation of the Panama Canal. The Protocol stipulates that there should be open and secure transit through the Panama Canal for all nations at all times.
Private security services provided abroad in 2025: tenth FDFA report on PSSA implementation

At its meeting on 13 May 2026, the Federal Council took note of the tenth annual report on the implementation of the Federal Act on Private Security Services Provided Abroad (PSSA). Under the Act, companies wishing to offer private security services abroad from Switzerland are required to notify the competent authority in advance. In 2025, the competent authorities received 82 declarations from companies. Although no activities were prohibited, two criminal complaints were lodged with the Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland.

Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis will visit the Republic of Moldova from 13 to 15 May. As Chairman-in-Office of the OSCE, he will hold a series of meetings in which he will address the organisation’s role in the settlement process of the Transdniestrian conflict. He will also attend the annual session of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, which is hosted this year by the Republic of Moldova.

On Tuesday, 5 May, President Guy Parmelin met with Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani in Rome. The talks focused on bilateral relations, security issues and competitiveness in Europe, as well as current international affairs. The response to the devastating fire in Crans Montana was also discussed. On 6 May, President Parmelin will attend the swearing-in ceremony of the new Swiss Guards at the Vatican. During his visit, he will meet Pope Leo XIV and Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin.

Die Direktorin der Direktion für Entwicklung und Zusammenarbeit (DEZA), Patricia Danzi, hat am 27. April 2026 in Pristina das neue Schweizer Kooperationsprogramm mit Kosovo vorgestellt. Das Programm im Umfang von 64.5 Millionen Franken läuft von 2026 bis 2029 und setzt auf demokratische Regierungsführung, wirtschaftliche Entwicklung sowie chancengerechte menschliche Entwicklung (“Equitable Human Development”). Es wird von der DEZA und der Abteilung Frieden und Menschenrechte (AFM) des EDA sowie dem Staatssekretariat für Wirtschaft (SECO) des WBF umgesetzt.

A small team from the Swiss embassy has returned to Tehran this week. The embassy was temporarily closed on 11 March 2026 due to the precarious security situation. The technical team of four Swiss employees is now preparing the gradual resumption of embassy operations.
