A long-term project of the Embassy of Switzerland in Japan, “Swiss Design Stories” was officially introduced on March 5, 2018 at Axis Gallery in Roppongi, Tokyo. Over 100 guests with expertise or a genuine interest in design and architecture attended this highly anticipated event.

Minister of the Embassy of Switzerland, Mr. Peter Nelson gave a welcome speech in Japanese in which he outlined the book’s aim to “shorten the spiritual distance” between Japan and Switzerland through stories of lesser known exchanges between iconic figures like Le Corbusier or Joseph Müller Brockman and their Japanese counterparts. His address was followed by an insightful panel talk featuring the team behind “Swiss Design Stories” , Mr. Tomoya Yoshida (planning, editing and text), Mr. Takahiro Kurashima (art direction and design), Mr. Toshinobu Nagata (text) and Mr. Ichiro Saga (text), architect Mr. Sho Kurokawa, and Mr. Jonas Pulver, Head of Culture and Public Affairs at the Embassy of Switzerland. Participants enjoyed the speakers’ take on Japan-Switzerland mutual influence and collaborations, their perspectives on modern design and architecture history, as well as their notable personal experiences in these fields.

Published in February 2018, thanks to the generous support of USM Modular Furniture, Breitling Japan Ltd., the Swiss Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Japan (SCCIJ), Mr. Masayuki Kurokawa (K & K Co., Ltd.) & Mr. Sho Kurokawa (Sho Kurokawa architects Co., Ltd.) and Switzerland Tourism, “Swiss Design Stories” is a limited edition not-for-sale book conceived to shed light on the stories of close friendships between Switzerland and Japan in the fields of design, craftsmanship and manufacturing. The combination of exclusive interviews, documents and archives intends to illuminate the developing ties between the two cultures on the global map of design, with a focus on both innovation and tradition.
