Death

The relevant authorities do not automatically submit documents regarding a death to the Swiss representations abroad. It is therefore essential that the necessary documents are transmitted to the competent Swiss representation in order to have the various Swiss registers updated free of charge.

Information/reminders from the Swiss representation concerning the birth of a child whose father is married to the mother at  the time of birth:

  • original birth certificate of the child in question
  • where applicable, a Swiss family book or certificate
  • for parents who are not registered with a Swiss representation, identity documents and place of residence.

Information/reminders from the Swiss representation concerning the birth of a child out of wedlock (i.e. whose father is not married to the mother at the time of birth):

  • if the father of the child is domiciled abroad, original certificate of acknowledgement of paternity
  • original birth certificate of the non-Swiss parent
  • original civil status document of the non-Swiss parent
  • if the non-Swiss parent is divorced, original of the final divorce decree showing date when it came into force
  • if the non-Swiss parent is widowed, original of the death certificate of the deceased spouse
  • valid identity document of the non-Swiss parent
