Ignazio Cassis on working visit to Italy and the Vatican

On 19 April Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis will travel to Rome for a three-day working visit and a series of talks with officials of the Holy See and the Italian Republic. The head of the FDFA will meet with the secretary of state of the Holy See, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and the secretary for relations with states, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher. In addition to opening the new premises of the Swiss embassy to the Vatican, he will meet with Italy's foreign minister, Antonio Tajani and economy and finance minister, Giancarlo Giorgetti.


Swiss president meets with Pope and Swiss Guard and presents site of new Swiss embassy

In Rome for the swearing-in of the new Swiss Guard, President of the Swiss Confederation Ignazio Cassis met today with Pope Francis and Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Vatican's secretary for relations with states. The talks focused on the historic bilateral relations between the two states, which have recently been further strengthened by the Federal Council's decision to establish a new Swiss embassy to the Holy See.


Swiss president visits the Vatican to meet the Pope and attend swearing-in of Swiss Guard

The Swiss president's visit will also be an opportunity to present the new Swiss embassy to the Holy See.


Switzerland and Holy See celebrate 100 years of renewed diplomatic relations

On the occasion of the celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the resumption of diplomatic relations with the Holy See, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis met in Bern with the Secretary of State of the Vatican, His Eminence Cardinal Pietro Parolin. During the official visit, a joint declaration was signed which aims to strengthen bilateral and multilateral cooperation in various areas related to peace promotion.


Swiss government agrees funding to renovate barracks of Pontifical Swiss Guard

At its meeting on 11 December 2020, the Federal Council agreed funding for the project to renovate the barracks of the Pontifical Swiss Guard in the Vatican. This is a single contribution to improve the accommodation and facilities of the Swiss Guard. The decision coincides with the centenary of Switzerland's resumption of diplomatic relations with the Holy See.



Pope Francis received in Switzerland by a delegation of the Federal Council

On Thursday, 21 June, Pope Francis arrived in Switzerland for a one-day visit. During their official talks, the President of the Swiss Confederation, Mr Alain Berset, and Pope Francis discussed the priorities of Switzerland and the Holy See, particularly regarding peace and security. Prior to that, the Pope was greeted at Geneva airport by President Berset, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, National Council president, Dominique de Buman, and a delegation from the Genevan authorities. Mr Cassis and Mr de Buman later also attended a meeting with the Pope. In the evening, Mr Berset and Federal Councillor Doris Leuthard will bid the Pope farewell on his departure.


Pope Francis to visit Switzerland on 21 June

Pope Francis will arrive in Switzerland on Thursday, 21 June. The head of the Roman-Catholic Church will be met on the part of the government by the President of the Swiss Confederation, Mr Alain Berset, and Federal Councillors Doris Leuthard and Ignazio Cassis.


Swiss government names new Ambassadors

The Swiss government (Federal Council) has approved the list of diplomatic staff transfers scheduled for 2014 submitted by the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs. The changes will be made in accordance with the normal rate of transfers, to be communicated at the time of the decision by the Federal Council. The appointments of Heads of Mission take effect as soon as the authorities in the host country communicate their approval. The Federal Council takes this opportunity to express its gratitude to the Ambassadors due to retire for the services rendered.
